In Diving for Pearls, Katherine Thomson explores hope, loss, ambition, greed and the triumph of character in adversity.
Diving for Pearls is the story of working-class couple, Barbara and Den. In love and facing the challenges and responsibilities of middle-age, they gamely confront pressing issues in their personal and working lives as their small coastal town transforms itself from an old industrial town to a brave new world of resorts and plush hotels.
In the midst of a shifting industrial landscape, with its buzz words of ‘restructuring’, ‘redeployment’ and ‘redundancy’, Barbara and Den are desperately trying to carve out decent lives for themselves. At times confronting, this play is balanced with trademark Aussie humour that springs from people facing difficult circumstances and trying to forge a path to a better future.
This is a uniquely Australian story about the shifting landscape of our coastal towns and a reminder of how lucky we are to live in Port Macquarie.
“... A Pearler for current times... one of the 10 best plays in the country...” Gail Kavanagh, Time Out.
