TEACHERS' PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Glasshouse believes strongly in providing professional development opportunities for our Teachers in the areas of performing arts, visual arts and heritage. 

It’s our belief that delivering a range of interesting and worthwhile workshops, focus groups and materials will reinforce a Teacher’s drive and commitment to student learning, assist them to build a greater understanding and enjoyment of the live arts, and support formal learning contexts for students.

Professional Development activities currently available as part of the Glasshouse's 2010 Education Program include:

  • CREATING TIME-LAPSE VIDEO
    Monday, 22 February 2010 @ 4.30 - 7.30pm.

    The aim of this workshop is to enable teachers to make a time-lapse sequence of images.  The workshop will focus around photographing natural phenomena, captured at intervals of 1 to 10 seconds and played back at 24 frames per second, creating a speeded up effect.

    Suitable for: Primary & Secondary teachers
    Focus area: Photography, Digital Media, Visual Arts

  • UNDERSTANDING HISTORY: WOMEN TRANSPORTED
    Friday, 28 May 2010 @ 4.30-6.30pm

    Join exhibition curator, Gaye Hendriksen, for a guided tour of Women Transported. Gaye will share her knowledge of the exhibition content and suggest ways of using the content for pre and post-visit activities.

    The exhibition profiles some of the women who lived in Australia’s 12 female factories, telling their stories and showing their lifestyles through clothing and textile reproductions along with fun interactive elements. Port Macquarie’s female factory and the women who were incarcerated here are focused on. An introduction to the local Family History Society will provide information and advice on researching family histories.

  • TEACHING MACBETH AND ROMEO & JULIET
    Bell Shakespeare Specialist Masterclass
    Thursday, 29 July 2010, 10:00am - 4:00pm

    A full day of Professional Development covering Shakespeare's bloodiest play and most tragic lvoe story. Delve into Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet in an inspiring full-day Professional Development Masterclass with Bell Shakespeare. Discover new and innovative ways to help students immerse themselves in the texts, exploring plot, language, dramatic techniques and different interpretations of the plays.   • INTRODUCTION TO THEATRICAL STAGE LIGHTING with Adrian Sterritt
    Tuesday, 17 August 2010 @ 4.30-6.30pm

    Glasshouse Senior Technician, Adrian Sterritt, is a WAAPA graduate and has worked in the theatrical lighting industry for 20 years, lighting productions for some of Australia's leading arts companies. Adrian will lead this introductory course designed to help participants:

    • Understand the role of lighting in a stage production and the techniques involved including colour, focus, depth, fade times and lighting angles.
    • Create different lighting states and realise the impact of light in communicating a location, atmosphere or emotion.

    This session will involve hands-on use of the Glasshouse Theatre lighting equipment. It will include a mix of theory and practice to develop participants’ abilities to think more creatively about lighting productions, and to better understand the Glasshouse Theatre standard lighting rig.

    This is an ideal development opportunity for any teacher directing or lighting live productions to better understand the importance of stage lighting in enhancing the live performance experience.

  • WHAT DOES A STAGE MANAGER DO?
    Tuesday, 26 October 2010 @ 4.30-6.30pm

    Belinda Gibson, Glasshouse Venue Operations Manager, is a NIDA graduate with more than 15 years national and international stage management experience with major public events, live theatre, opera, dance, children's shows, TV and community concerts. Belinda will lead this introductory course to help participants:

    • Learn the language, and basic process of stage management from pre -production to rehearsal to production 
    • Develop general skills, techniques and methods to enable smoother-running events

    The session will be mostly theory and involve the techniques and basic paperwork templates to use for the stage management of any production, from planning to calling a show. This is an ideal session for teachers involved on the ground in running and managing school productions or concerts or who need to communicate with technical teams such as lighting, sound or stage technicians.
