MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL

Jeanie Linders

Can 500,000 Australians be wrong? That’s the number who’ve seen this hilarious one act ‘laugh-a-thon’ during the past two and a half years. And they love it! When the show opened in Melbourne, it was scheduled to run for eight weeks and lasted seven months.

Jeanie Linders attributes the show’s success to its validation of the audience, telling women that “who they are and where they’re at right now, is an okay place to be”. And as for the blokes, Linders says the show “has them thinking about their wives in a different light”!

Menopause the Musical celebrates life over 40 and tackles a once taboo subject. The four characters – an ageing soap star, an earth mother, a power woman and a rural housewife – meet fighting in a lingerie sale in a department store. The crux of the show is a clever appropriation of 1960s and 1970s pop tunes – The Great Pretender, Only You, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Stand by Your Man, I Will Survive and 20 more – all sung with gusto and all with their ‘new’ lyrics.
