House and Home Exhibition

This work is centred around two homes, one that the artist had lived in for 35 years and one, which is occupied now. House and Home is a reflection on moving house from a psychological, imagined and remembered experience.

"...the house is a world in itself"

                 - Poetics of Space Bachelard,G. p37

House and Home is a reflection on moving house from a psychological, imagined and remembered experience.

“I think the first works reflect a more wistful feeling and after the move a subtle change takes place. There is a visual connection between some of this work and a previous exhibition titled Young at Heart shown at Grafton Regional Gallery. Memory was a strong trigger for this work.” SUE BELL 2023

In a poem by Emily Dickinson on houses she is told what they should be.

"Houses”-so the Wise Men tell me –

          “Mansions”! must be warm!
Mansions cannot let the tears in,
          Mansions must exclude the storm!"
The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, p59.
